Natural Hair is Making Waves

Posted on: December 23rd, 2011

At Simply, we encourage women daily to look good, and FEEL great. A big part of “feeling great” is to be comfortable with your entire self, from head to toe. We love this article from USAToday and wanted to share!

“Natural hair has been a movement for several years. What we’re seeing now is a confirmation that this is a lifestyle that is very important to a lot of women,” says Cyntelia Abrams, marketing coordinator for Design Essentials, an Atlanta-based hair-care company that commissioned a 2010 study on the popularity of natural hair.

The number of black women who say they do not use products to chemically relax or straighten their hair jumped to 36% in 2011, up from 26% in 2010, according to a report by Mintel, a consumer spending and market research firm. Sales of relaxer kits dropped by 17% between 2006 and 2011, according to Mintel.

TWAs (teeny-weeny afros), mega-size ‘fros, braids, coils, heat-straightened ‘dos — a number of styles are being worn by black women, from statement-making fashionistas to image-conscious professionals.

Rochelle Ritchie, 29, a reporter for WPTV in West Palm Beach, Fla., made headlines last year when she went natural after years of chemical straightening, braiding, extensions and wigs. “It wasn’t me,” says Ritchie, who grew tired of “the financial burden” and “feeling like I was covering up.”

Tangerine Tango – Hot Color of 2012 According to Pantone

Posted on: December 16th, 2011

At Simply Fashion, we are constantly on the search for the latest styles and trends in fashion, and ways to bring them to our Guests for an affordable price. When we saw the latest story from msn.com about Pantone’s declaration of the HOT new color of 2012, we were pleased to know we are ahead of the curve!

From Samantha Critchell of the Associated Press

The world doesn’t need more gray, and the blues are covered, too. What consumer products need is a jolt, a shot of energy and boldness, all of which comes from Tangerine Tango, the reddish-orange hue that Pantone announced Wednesday as its top color for 2012.

“There’s the element of encouragement with orange, it’s building on the ideas of courage and action, that we want to move on to better things. I think it would be a disservice to go with a relaxed, soothing color now,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, the research division of Pantone Inc., which creates color standards for the fashion, beauty and home industries.

The annual forecast for the next year’s dominant color takes into consideration both what Pantone thinks shoppers want and need. Those are influenced by the designer runways, fabric shows, news events, pop culture and consumer habits. “Part of what we do is look at the zeitgeist,” Eiseman explained. “We have to look at everything in the world around us. It’s not an arbitrary choice.”

Consumer spending is a big player in reviving the economy and it needs adrenaline, she said. Orange is a more urgent call to action than last year’s hot-pink hue Honeysuckle, which was also supposed to channel cheerfulness coupled with nostalgia. Before that, there was the more serene turquoise and optimistic yellow.

Stay tuned to our shelves in 2012 to see this HOT new color as a part of our fashion color palate in shoes, accessories and clothes!

Simple Steps to Avoid Getting Sick This Season

Posted on: November 2nd, 2011

The colder months bring on a myriad of things to look forward to – the Holidays, that perfect sweater or coat, hot chocolate, chili on the crockpot – but also with the cold comes the flu and other sicknesses. Simply Fashion wants to help you prepare so as not to get stuck feeling the yucks this Winter Season!

The women at Glamour consulted with their experts for some simple ways to avoid sickness this season.

Keep your hands squeaky clean

We say it time and time again, but just because we love you, we’ll remind you—wash those hands! The flu virus can live on surfaces like tables and keyboards for two to eight hours. Between grimy countertops, spotty doorknobs and sweaty machines at the gym, there is really no better defense against germs than washing your hands with antibacterial soap or disinfecting them with sanitizer. Both are equally effective, says Robert Truax, D.O., a family physician at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

Stay hydrated

“Our body is made up of mostly water, and when we’re dehydrated, it’s just an extra stress on our system,” says Truax. Dryness—think a Rudolph-red nose or a scratchy throat—decreases your immunity barriers and opens the door to infection. Drinking plenty of water is crucial to staying healthy.

Get a good night’s sleep

Washing your hands, staying hydrated and eating well can all go to waste if you’re not getting enough shut-eye. “Our immune system is very, very good at fighting things off, but we do things to harm it,” says Robert Lamberts, M.D., a primary-care physician and health blogger at distractible.org. “When people don’t get the sleep that they need, their body can’t restore itself.”

According to Truax, snoozing for a minimum seven to eight hours a night can give your body the downtime it needs to fight off infection.

Remember that supplements are NOT replacements

Our physicians agree, even a large vitamin C tablet can’t guarantee that you’re better protected against every nasty bug that floats around. “It’s far better to eat a balanced diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables,” says Lamberts. “You want your body to be in its maximum condition to fight off illness.”

And don’t be fooled by products that claim to support a healthy immune system either. “Their choice of words just means it won’t make you unhealthy,” says Lamberts. “Can they say it builds a healthy immune system? No. They haven’t proven it.”

Stay Active!

Don’t use cold weather, hectic holiday shopping or a stacked schedule of festive soirees as an excuse to skip your workout. “Getting plenty of exercise actually reduces the stress hormone cortisol and improves your immune system,” says Vanessa Maier, M.D., a family physician at University Hospitals Case Medical Center.

Don’t lower your defenses – even at home

Unfortunately, spending time with friends and loved ones could be just as dangerous, in terms of getting sick, as hitting the mall. When hugs, handshakes and finger foods abound, you’re more likely to lower your germ-fighting shields. For example: “When I’m at the office, I’m washing my hands on a regular basis with every exam room,” says Lamberts. “Family events are where you’re at the highest risk—places you’d naturally be the most comfortable.” So keep up that hand-washing before you snack on a mini quiche.
