The word “organic” tends to make us think of the terms “healthier” and “more nutritious,” but this is not always the case. While the majority of organic products are just that, there are some things you should know before spending that extra cash.

Here are some facts to help you better understand the meaning behind the organic label:

When something is labeled “organic” it has been given a seal of approval by the USDA as being a product that was grown according to certain specifications.

ORGANIC VEGETABLES are grown without using pesticides, artificial preservatives, fertilizers, herbicides, sewage sludge or irradiation, which acts as a preservative.

ORGANIC MEATS and EGGS come from animals that are raised sustainably. These animals are not allowed antibiotics, growth hormones, altered corn or feed. Essentially, all of the food these animals take in are all natural and chemical free. They graze straight from the land.

ORGANIC DAIRY also comes from animals that feed in an organic manner.

ORGANIC SEAFOOD doesn’t really exist unfortunately. It is hard to maintain an organic system for fish and other seafood, so the USDA does not yet have a label for organic seafood. Stay tuned.

It is also important to note the different kind of organic labeling you may see on products:

“100% Organic”: All products with these labels are made up of 100 percent organic ingredients.

A round green USDA seal: All of these products are made up of at least 95 percent organic ingredients.

“Made with organic ingredients”: All of these products are made up of at least 70 percent organic ingredients.

Any product that is made up of less than 70 percent organic ingredients cannot be labeled as organic.

Not all organic is made equally, so do your research and find the items that you like best.

And if you don’t want to necessarily shell out for the more expensive organic products, these thick-skinned veggies are great even when not organic:

-Onions
-Pineapple
-Avocado
-Mango
-Sweet peas
-Watermelon
-Sweet potato

“Natural hair has been a movement for several years. What we’re seeing now is a confirmation that this is a lifestyle that is very important to a lot of women,” says Cyntelia Abrams, marketing coordinator for Design Essentials, an Atlanta-based hair-care company that commissioned a 2010 study on the popularity of natural hair.

The number of black women who say they do not use products to chemically relax or straighten their hair jumped to 36% in 2011, up from 26% in 2010, according to a report by Mintel, a consumer spending and market research firm. Sales of relaxer kits dropped by 17% between 2006 and 2011, according to Mintel.

TWAs (teeny-weeny afros), mega-size ‘fros, braids, coils, heat-straightened ‘dos — a number of styles are being worn by black women, from statement-making fashionistas to image-conscious professionals.

Rochelle Ritchie, 29, a reporter for WPTV in West Palm Beach, Fla., made headlines last year when she went natural after years of chemical straightening, braiding, extensions and wigs. “It wasn’t me,” says Ritchie, who grew tired of “the financial burden” and “feeling like I was covering up.”

The world doesn’t need more gray, and the blues are covered, too. What consumer products need is a jolt, a shot of energy and boldness, all of which comes from Tangerine Tango, the reddish-orange hue that Pantone announced Wednesday as its top color for 2012.

“There’s the element of encouragement with orange, it’s building on the ideas of courage and action, that we want to move on to better things. I think it would be a disservice to go with a relaxed, soothing color now,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, the research division of Pantone Inc., which creates color standards for the fashion, beauty and home industries.

The annual forecast for the next year’s dominant color takes into consideration both what Pantone thinks shoppers want and need. Those are influenced by the designer runways, fabric shows, news events, pop culture and consumer habits. “Part of what we do is look at the zeitgeist,” Eiseman explained. “We have to look at everything in the world around us. It’s not an arbitrary choice.”

Consumer spending is a big player in reviving the economy and it needs adrenaline, she said. Orange is a more urgent call to action than last year’s hot-pink hue Honeysuckle, which was also supposed to channel cheerfulness coupled with nostalgia. Before that, there was the more serene turquoise and optimistic yellow.
